As I near 50, I kneel down daily in front of a picture of the fountain of youth in gratitude for my stamina, being in shape and not looking too run down so far.

Ok, I don’t really do that, but maybe I should!

(Photo/ Lorraine C Ladish Twitter)

I do kiss the tube of tretinoin that keeps my skin looking supple! Would I look as youthful if I hadn’t been using this on and off for the past five years? As a beauty editor, I also get to test the latest anti-aging creams and some actually seem to soften the passage of time.

I consider myself a capable professional and mom who has at least half a brain (after I’ve had lots of morning coffee, that is!). But I also enjoy manicures, highlights, facials, skin-treatments and wearing make-up. I revel in exercising and feeling good in my clothes and at times, wearing killer high-heels, even though they make my bunions hurt!

So, I’m grateful today but, will I feel the same in 10 or 20 years? I sure hope so.

The same way that I color my hair and do my nails, I don’t rule out a little bit of cosmetic improvement down the road. But, how much is too much?

Cosmetic procedures gone wrong

When I saw the recent pictures of Mary Tyler Moore on Mail Online, I was aghast.

Mary Tyler Moore (Photo/ Celebrities Photos)

Tyler Moore was a looker in her youth. At 74 (or so she says), you would expect her to appear older, of course, but unfortunately she looks worse than old. She is downright scary. And yet, she denies having had plastic surgery and blames tripping over her dog for her uneven too-plumped up cheeks and her tight skin that makes her look like she’s standing in a wind-tunnel. Now, in my opinion, that is not dignified ageing. It’s cosmetic surgery gone wrong.

Joan Rivers (Photo/ Plastic Celebrity)

In 2009, Time magazine published an article about Joan Rivers, who does not hide her addiction to plastic surgery. The article deals with her book about her life, told through plastic surgery interventions. So, she’s open about it. But she still looks pretty bad to me.

Meg Ryan (Photo/ Celebrity Plastic Surgery)

Actress Meg Ryan reportedly had a facelift in her very early forties, plus lip augmentation and a few more fix-ups that are often speculated about in the gossip magazines. She did not need a facelift shortly after turning forty, anymore than she needs further surgery now.

Plastic surgery done right

Then there are others such as model Christie Brinkley who seems to have the best plastic surgeon. She looks eerily similar to herself in her 30’s, but she is 56. The before and after photos on the Huffington Post of her latest surgery, both look pretty good. But of course, any other 56 year old does not –by the laws of nature and ageing- look the same now as she did at 36. And yet, I commend her – and her surgeon – for not looking freakish. However, she also sets a really high standard for “regular” women.

Plastic surgery addicts

Cher (Photo/ AP Joe Cavaretta)

Cher, in her mid sixties, is no knitting-booties grandma. She has admitted to undergoing plastic surgery many times during her life. And yet, in a 2010 article on Mail Online, the star is caught using tape to tighten her neck. Didn’t all those facelifts do the trick? I may be one of the few women to actually like Cher and her style, but – do I want to look like her at 64? I don’t think so.

What are we regular women to do?

I aspire to age gracefully. I don’t expect to look 48 at 58, and even less so at 68. But I also don’t want to look worn down and old for my age.

I suppose the trick for those of us who do not make a living off of our looks, is to go for a demure look.

A man once told me the best facial enhancement a woman could go for is one that makes people perhaps wonder if she did or didn’t go under the knife or have something done, because she looks so good! Not distorted, not freakish, not like she is 20 years younger. Just herself, but well-rested and youthful.

I would add that being classy, somewhat fit and always ready poke fun at yourself is the best natural anti-aging trick!

As Shirley McLaine said: “Aging is not for sissies.”

Study Finds Liposuction May Be Good For Your Health

DR. ROSHINI RAJAPAKSA

MYFOXNY.COM – Looking good may have never felt so good. New research suggests some cosmetic surgery may not only make you look better it might actually make you heart healthy, too. A nip here, a tuck there may have you looking your best, but could it actually be healthy for you too?

A recent study finds liposuction — one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States — may also be good for your heart.

“The study found that patients who had liposuction experienced a significant reduction in triglyceride levels and white blood cell counts,” said Dr. Adam Schaffner, Director of Plastic Surgery at JUVA Skin and Laser Center in New York, referring to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

“In addition to improving the patient’s appearance, liposuction can also help lower triglyceride levels and thus reduce a patient’s risk of developing heart disease, diabetes or stroke,” Dr. Schaffner said.

The new research would certainly be an added benefit for patients looking for a leaner, trimmer body.

Susan Gyrisko said she no idea about the study when she got her recent smart lipo procedure which removed fat from her waist. Susan was pleased with the results and then got some additional positive results from her doctor.

“He called me and said there was a study being done and my cholesterol numbers went down significantly following my procedure,” Gyrisko said.

Prior to her surgery, Gyrisko didn’t even know she had high cholesterol, yet after lipo her cholesterol dropped to a normal range.

But it was her triglyceride levels that really plummeted, before lipo her level was 128, after surgery her levels dropped to 68, a 46 percent reduction.

While the results of the study are interesting, further research needs to be done to confirm these findings and also look closer into the possible effect the removal of fat cells can have on cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Experts say it could take years to truly understand the potential health benefits of liposuction.

In the meantime there is no substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise.

As she skied elegantly down the slopes at her favourite winter resort of Klosters in Switzerland earlier this month, there was no denying Tara Palmer-Tomkinson’s fabulous physique.

However, a closer inspection of pictures reveal the former It-Girl’s face is virtually unrecognisable. At 40, she appears to have developed the soaring eyebrows, triangular visage and slanting eyes so familiar on many famous women.

Stars such as Kylie Minogue, Carla Bruni, Lulu and Madonna are just some of those who’ve begun sporting facial features so feline that they’re now being dubbed the ‘Celebrity Cat Club’. It’s usually the next step on from the ‘pillow face’, where so much filler is pumped into cheeks, they begin to look unnaturally plump.

TARA PALMER-TOMKINSON (left). Adrian Richards, of Aurora Clinics, says: ‘Her eyebrows are much higher, usually the result of Botox. KYLIE MINOGUE (right). She denies using Botox but her high brows, plump cheeks and glossy forehead giver her a kittenish look

But what measures do these women have to take to get the distinctive cat-faced look made infamous by the so-called Bride of Wildenstein — former millionaire art dealer’s wife Jocelyn Wildenstein — in the late 1990s?

Dirk Kremer, a Harley Street plastic surgeon, explains: ‘While the “pillow face” is caused by using too much filler, the “cat face” is the result of having too much of everything — all done badly. Those soaring eyebrows occur when too much Botox is given, especially in the centre of the forehead. This makes it very smooth and can cause the centre of the brows to drop.

‘The outer edges of the eyebrows then fly up in a very artificial way. It’s a kind of Fifties diva look that is ridiculous on most women.

‘The second element of the cat face is cheek fillers. If too much is put in, the enlarged cheek presses against the eye, making it look smaller and slanted. This is especially obvious if the woman is smiling.

‘Too much filler also gives the face a triangular look: wide at the cheekbones and comparatively narrow at the jaw. In moderation, this is a youthful shape; but in excess, it just adds to the feline quality. And if Botox has always been used to eliminate any lines, the smooth, artificial, cat-like shape is further emphasised.’

But why, when the cat look is so strange, do so many celebrities end up slipping into it?

Plastic surgeon Rajiv Grover, from London’s King Edward VII Hospital, says: ‘Studies show the central facial triangle is a major element of the beauty of the young face. Full cheeks act as a “pedestal” for the eyes, enhancing their appearance.’ The theory is that plumping up our cheeks makes us look more youthful and returns us to our former beauty.

Dr Kremer adds: ‘Fillers in moderation can be amazingly rejuvenating. Celebrities try them and get a lot of compliments. So they think: “Why not put in more and look even better?”

‘But by insisting on the same dose at shorter intervals, they can forget what they used to look like and lose all sense of proportion and reality.’

Plastic surgeon Dr Marco Lens says he regularly sees the ‘cat face’ in his Harley Street surgery. ‘Women come to me because they know they don’t look right, but don’t know why,’ he says. ‘By blowing up their faces like a balloon, they don’t look younger, but like old women trying to look younger.’

So it’s not surprising that some celebrities are learning the lessons of those who have gone too far with Botox and fillers.

Instead, actresses Jennifer Aniston and Anna Friel choose treatments like peels, gentle lasers and skin-tightening such as Pelleve that help to improve the texture, elasticity, clarity and firmness of skin. The result is a more elegant, natural look.

The good news about temporary fillers is that they wear off in between four and 18 months, depending on their thickness. Botox also wears off after four to six months. So, in most cases, an accidental cat face will vanish of its own accord.

By MIKE PUMA @ NY POST

Kobe Bryant can be credited with an assist to Alex Rodriguez.

According to multiple sources, the Yankees third baseman recently followed a recommendation from Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers star, and traveled to Germany for an experimental therapy called Orthokine on his bothersome right knee.

The innovative procedure was performed on Rodriguez — with the Yankees’ blessing — within the last month, according to one source. The Yankees first cleared the procedure with the commissioner’s office to avoid the appearance that Rodriguez might be receiving impermissible treatment.

Rodriguez, the source said, would not have had the procedure without the Yankees’ permission. Last season, the team was blindsided by a report that pitcher Bartolo Colon had undergone controversial stem-cell treatment.

Orthokine involves taking blood from the patient’s arm and spinning it in a centrifuge, a machine used in laboratories to spin objects around a fixed axis. The serum is then injected into the affected area — in this case, Rodriguez’s knee.

Bryant underwent the same treatment last summer to try to strengthen his right knee. He also reportedly had the procedure done in October to treat a chronic left ankle ailment.

It remains unclear if the procedure actually works long-term.

“A lot of athletes I’ve talked to really think this stuff works, but we really don’t have a lot of scientific knowledge behind it of exactly what’s happening,” said Dr. Jonathan Glashow, the co-chief of sports medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.

“It’s a great way to reduce inflammation and therefore pain, and that’s the essence of it. I think a lot of the athletes who have wear-and-tear on their knees benefit from this. You do it for a while and if it doesn’t stay good you do it again in a few years.”

Rodriguez underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee in July, but returned to the Yankees’ lineup for the stretch run.

In 68 at-bats following the surgery, he hit .191 with three homers and 10 RBIs. In the Yankees’ AL Division Series loss to the Tigers he it .111 with no homers and three RBIs.

Rodriguez has resumed offseason workouts, according to a source, and is expected to arrive on time for spring training in February.

Just in case the Yankees need any assurance the procedure shouldn’t sidetrack Rodriguez: Bryant played in the Lakers’ opener on Sunday, weeks after reportedly undergoing the treatment on his ankle.

“These guys like it, they say it works and they are looking for any potential edge,” Glashow said. “It’s not an absolute thing. While it appears a lot of guys get relief from it, the jury is still out in terms of it really being critically studied.”

By Lynn Davidson

Women curl them, tint them, perm them and coat them in layers of mascara to achieve the perfect look.

But even that is not enough.

It seems we are now addicted to glueing layers of fake eyelashes to our lids in order to replicate the celebrity look of Cheryl Cole and the stars of Strictly Come Dancing.

High street stores Debenhams, Boots and Superdrug have all reported booming sales of synthetic lashes.

But experts warned last night there are dangers from overuse and now wearing double layers of the lashes which has become the trend.
Hair restoration surgeon Dr Bessam Farjo said he had treated patients who were left with gaps in their lashes due to overuse of the synthetic lashes.

He said: ‘I have seen people who have used them extensively, or all the time, or for long periods of time, and they have lost lashes or a certain number of lashes to the point where they have to keep wearing the false lashes or they have come in and asked can it be rectify surgically?

‘Not everybody is the same but they do have the potential to cause damage if you persistently wear them all the time, with double layers, or don’t remove them properly and eventually the weight might affect them.

‘The glue used can create tension and can pull out the natural lashes when removed. I would advise caution. If you use them gently, take them off, don’t wear them all the time, it will be fine.

‘But there is potential for causing damage but it can vary from per to person because not everyone’s lashes or hair is as vulnerable as the next person.’

And the hair expert said those of us who are getting on in years are more vulnerable to damage than younger girls.

He said: ‘It can be an issue if you are older because your eyelashes grow differently or are not as vital. It’s mainly a genetic thing some people have better eyelashes and some don’t.

‘That is another reason why some people wear the false eyelashes in the first place.’

Despite the fact they have been around for years, it seems false lashes, which are a relatively cheap way of creating a dramatic look, are more popular than ever.

But the glue which bonds the lash strips to the eyelid can cause irritation if the lashes are slept in and the glue is not removed properly.

Dr Farjo added: ‘Most of the time if you damage your hair or the eyelashes, the body will recover. If you stop using whatever is causing the damage then the eyelashes can recover and grow.

‘But if you have caused permanent damage and there is a gap in the eyelash, it is possible to surgically plant hairs there.

‘You can take hairs from other parts of the body, most commonly they are taken from the back of the head or behind the ear.

‘You can then transplant the hairs one at a time, very carefully into the eyelid. But there are problems with that.’

Superdrug, who sell more than four million pairs of false eyelashes every year, say they are seeing women of all ages buying into the trend.

Sara Wolverson, Superdrug director of beauty said: ‘Looking at sales patterns over the past few years it is easy to see the growth of lashes for key occasions and this year the start of Strictly has become a key marker for the start of the winter party season. Similarly we see a growth in the latest X Factor trend. Customers are always striving to get their hands on the next big trend.’

Mark Taylor, of lash makers, eye CANDY said they had seen a massive year on year growth of 100 per cent in the past three years.

He said: ‘The false lash category has been one of the biggest growth areas in the beauty market. This phenomenal growth can be attributed to a requirement for quick fix glamour and the continuing obsession with celebrity culture, as women are continuing to emulate the look of their favourite celebrities.

‘This has also affected what type of lash sells best.

‘The growing popularity of shows such as X Factor has led to consumers opting to wear a fuller lash look than in previous years. Our best-selling lash styles are now our 60’s Volumise in 004 and 015 compared to our Naturalise Individual Strip Lashes from a couple of years ago.

‘The double-lash look is also a trend that continues to dominate the market, with many companies now producing a double-lash strip lash as opposed to the need for consumers to wear two pairs of single lashes.’

Debenhams reported similar sales with an overall 42 per cent rise on purchases of false lashes across the UK and the regions with the highest sales being in the midlands at more than 55 per cent and the south east at 51 per cent.

For ages, blood sucking has been the preserve of vampires, but medical science has now put ‘dracula therapy’ to good use – to fight ageing. A test tube full of your own blood could be used to get rid of wrinkles, say doctors.

“Dracula therapy, as the name suggests, is a therapy that uses blood. We extract nearly 15-20 ml (a test tube) of blood from the person’s body, and after processing it with growth hormones in a laboratory, the blood is injected on the person’s face,” A.S. Bath, senior consultant and head of department of plastic and cosmetic surgery at BLK Super Speciality Hospital here, told us.

Platelet rich plasma (a component of blood) is extracted from the blood, after which drugs are used to release a growth factor in it. The fresh solution is then injected on the face using micro-needles after applying local anaesthesia.

“The concept is that your own blood with additions of growth hormones will help stimulate the growth of fresh cells, DNA repair, heal scars and treat wrinkled skin without any chemicals or surgical procedure. And that too there are just three sittings required without any hospitalisation,” Bath explained.

Apart from being non-invasive, the technique also reduces the chances of allergic reactions; as the body gets back its own blood, allergic reactions are not there.

Introduced in Britain by London-based French cosmetic doctor, Daniel Sister, the technique has found many enthusiasts in India, say doctors. Women who had been opting for botox and laser therapy now have a painless technique to vouch for, feel experts.

“We have conducted eight such therapies in the last three months. Botox paralyses the facial muscles to stop wrinkles. But with dracula therapy, your own blood is used to replenish the damaged skin cells, making the skin look baby-soft and natural,” said Datinderjeet Singh Tulla, consultant at the department of plastic and cosmetic surgery at the same hospital.

A single sitting for the therapy costs around Rs.25,000. And the trend is catching up among women in their 30s who have the urge to look their best in the social space.

“It would be wrong to say that it’s just a trend in the West to try cosmetic surgery. In urban India, people now want to fight ageing and score with looks wherever possible,” Tulla says, adding that his clients have ranged from a hospital nurse to a documentary filmmaker.

“More middle-aged women want to try this technique,” Tulla said.

But some precautions are needed with the technique that is touted to be the generation next of plastic surgery, experts believe.

“Surely it is a promising technique. But knowing that we have Indians willing to experiment with looks, people should check that the clinics where blood is processed is certified and has a hygienic laboratory,” advises Bath.

The laboratory should have sterile and aseptic conditions, a licensed blood bank for preparing the serum should be involved in the process, and the surgeons performing the technique should also be certified.

The blood has to be fresh and processed for plasma within hours; otherwise the chances of infection are also there.

“Since we don’t have strict licensed norms for clinics in India, the technique is likely to be used for commercial purposes in times to come. After the age of 18, anybody could try it,” Bath added.

Dr. Park Ave.®, in partnership with Merz Aesthetics, is repeating its highly successful “buy one, get one free” Radiesse® offer on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. This represents a $749 savings.

“We can’t think of a better holiday gift than to repeat one of our most popular promotions,” said Dr. Paul Fondacaro, CEO of Dr. Park Ave. “Our previous Radiesse day in October was completely booked. Our patients, our selves, and Merz Aesthetics – the maker of Radiesse Volumizing Filler – were thrilled. As soon as the event was over, we started planning another opportunity to offer this promotion. We’re really looking forward to helping you look your best for the holiday season.”

“Radiessse is one of our favorite products,” Dr. Fondacaro continued. “It delivers very fast results, that can last for a year or more. Not everyone may need two vials of Radiesse in one session; and if that’s the case, we’ll be happy to store one vial for future use – or some clients prefer to bring a friend, so they both get treated with Radiesse for the price of one visit. If our patients can save $749 at Dr. Park Ave., they’ll have that much more to spend on their holiday shopping!”

How Radiesse Works

Radiesse not only replaces your lost collagen, it actually stimulates your body to create more. Collagen is what gives volume, flexibility and strength to healthy, young skin. As a part of the aging process, your own natural collagen breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. This loss of elasticity and volume results in wrinkles, facial lines and skin laxity – all of which rob your skin of its youthful, fresh appearance.

Ideal wrinkle reduction is achieved by replenishing your skin’s lost volume. Upon injection, Radiesse Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to reduce the signs of aging, due to the calcium-based ingredients, and gel, that comprise the product. But what’s unique about Radiesse Volumizing Filler is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin — providing structure, and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of Radiesse Volumizing Filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients. That’s why more and more: cosmetic surgeons; dermatologists; and other medical professionals; are choosing Radiesse Volumizing Filler to achieve long-lasting facial rejuvenation

Reserve Now

Our previous Radiesse Promotion on Oct. 20 was completely sold out. Customers are already reserving spots for the Dec. 8 event. Please call our Franklin Lakes office now at (201) 485-8400, to make sure you can take advantage of this offer. Happy Holidays!

Fat transfer has seen a revival in recent years. Although the first reported cases of transplanting a patient’s own fat to other areas date back to the late 19th century, it has not held much promise until the last few decades. The main reason why fat transfer was slow in becoming was due its poor tenacity. Fat has a very limited blood supply; and needs to be handled very carefully. The original fat harvesting technique involved anesthetizing the donor area with a lidocaine solution; and aspirating the fat into a large barrel syringe. The collected fat then needed to be separated by centrifuge. Both of these steps are highly operator dependent; and even in the best of hands, the fat is only partially viable with this method. There is a certain amount of trauma to the fat cells, during the harvesting and separating technique, that can injure the cell membrane of fat cells – making them useless for grafting.

The next step needs close attention to detail as well; and that involves injecting the fat into the recipient area. We already know that the fat is very sensitive to any trauma. It cannot be injected through very small needles or cannulas; since that can be harmful to the fat. It’s also very important to make sure that the fat is injected evenly, and to areas where blood supply is not questionable. Once the fat is placed into the recipient area, the goal is to have the fat cells develop connections to a nearby blood supply by a process called angiogenesis, or neovascularization. It stands to reason that the best chance of survival is at the interface (of fat and blood supply). Fat surrounded only by other fat does not do well; and undergoes what’s termed central necrosis. This means that unless the transplanted fat is “touching” other tissue with good blood supply, it will not survive.

Recently there has been a great interest in adding PRP to the transplanted fat. The goal is to improve the fat retention, or survival, rate. Several well conducted studies have shown exciting and very promising results. Recently at the annual cosmetic conference sponsored by the National Society of Cosmetic Physicians (NSCOP) in Tucson Arizona, the subject of PRP in fat transfers was a hot topic. The results showed increased retention, and overall enhanced wound healing. No doubt we are witnessing a very promising role of PRP in fat transplantation.

Dr. Park Ave.®, in partnership with Merz Aesthetics, is introducing Xeomin® to its patient base with a $50** Rebate offer. For a limited time, Dr. Park Ave. patients treated with Xeomin will receive a $50** mail-in rebate coupon.

Dr. Paul Fondacaro, CEO of Dr. Park Ave., looks forward to acquainting his patients with Xeomin. “We’re thrilled to be one of the first practices to offer Xeomin to our clients. I’m confident our customers will be pleased when they try Xeomin.” Dr. Fondacaro continued: “Merz Aesthetics is going the extra mile for Dr. Park Ave. patients by continuing to partner with us to offer promotional events. Our recent Radiesse® promotion – a joint sponsorship with Merz — was very well received; and we are delighted that Merz is partnering with us again to introduce Xeomin.

“The FDA approval of XEOMIN is a significant milestone for Merz Aesthetics and a promising addition to our entire aesthetics franchise,” said Dennis Condon, President & Chief Business Officer of Merz Aesthetics, Inc. . “We are confident that XEOMIN will provide patients and physicians with a new option for improving the appearance of glabellar lines.”

The approval of XEOMIN is based on the results of two pivotal U.S. clinical trials involving 16 investigational sites, and included 547 healthy adult patients. In both studies, XEOMIN significantly improved the appearance of glabellar lines 30 days following the first injection, when compared to placebo. XEOMIN is the only botulinum toxin currently approved in the U.S. that does not require refrigeration prior to reconstitution.

XEOMIN is approved for the temporary improvement in the appearance of glabellar lines in 14 countries in the European Union (EU), including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain, under the brand name BOCOUTURE®.
